Match Report
Right from the off the Colts displayed an intent that they were looking to place their recent defeats behind them. And with Ravi in the midfield leading by example, to a man the tackling was stronger and the passing crisper. Looking more relaxed on the ball and moving it around in neat triangles, the Colts were amassing attacks from right, left and centre and were able to apply persistent pressure on the opposition's back line, but despite winning numerous corners and throw-ins deep in the opposition's territory, the Woodmansterne defence held up well, and a rebound from the cross bar was as near as the Colts came to taking the lead before going behind to what was probably only Woodmanstene's second attack of the game after fifteen minutes. Attacking down the right flank their winger clipped in a cross from close to the corner flag which bounced awkardly in front of Peter and which he could only palm up and behind him and despite Jake's last ditch attempt to clear the goal line the ball ended up in the back of our net. Still the Colts kept up their work rate. Ravi and James continued to shine as the main ball winners in the midfield with Cameron profiting as the main playmaker, picking up the ball at the breakdown and distributing it both left and right. With Ewan and Callum re-acquainted in central defence we saw a more confident look return to the back four than of late and and the link ups between Sam T and Emir on the left and Jake and Matthew G on the right were more fluid as a result. Backed up by Peter's alertness in coming out to sweep up to any ball over the top of the back line the Colts goal was rarely threatened. Yet despite all these good things the Colts frustratingly remained a goal to the deficit at half time.
With a pat on the back and the call of more of the same for the second half, the Colts soon began to exert pressure again on the Woodmansterne back line and were rewarded after 40 minutes with a well taken equaliser when Sam H arrived at the back stick to convert a neat three pass movement which started on the right wing and moved smartly across the Woodmansterne penalty area, splitting the defence apart. However, relief was short lived as from the restart Woodmansterne attacked down the centre and a fine strike from outside the box saw the ball cannon off the right hand upright back across the penalty area and was promptly converted at the second attempt as Ashtead struggled to clear their lines. But heads did not drop. Matt L replaced Sam T at left back as Ashtead continued to force the pace of the game, particularly down down the left flank. And the pressure paid off with Sam H sprinting onto to a ball put beyond Woodmansterne back line to slide the ball beneath the advancing keeper to claim his and Ashtead's second goal of the game with ten minutes remaining. Still Ashtead pushed on in search of a winner. But as the game opened up so did the opportunites at the other end. However, Ashtead's resolve remained strong and apart from the odd scare, Woodmansterne's attack remained infrequent. With only minutes remaining and after more good build up play, Emir saw his neatly chipped shot rebound back off the right hand post and it looked as if despite all their efforts the points would be shared. But shortly afterwards Ryan settled the game in the Colt's favour and although the keeper slowed his shot the ball rolled and rolled and despite the best efforts of the retreating defenders, continued on its way until finally, gently nestling in the back of the Woodmansterne net.
The colts had to repel a last minute indirect free kick from inside the penalty area to claim a well deserved 3:2 victory away to Woodmansterne Hyde this Sunday. A victory made all the sweeter by the fact that, despite setting the pace from the first whistle, they had to come from behind twice to secure all three points.
