Match Report
Firstly well done to all the boys, we had a bare 11 and a few boys were playing out of position. Grand Drive were an unknown quantity and proved to be very physical and vocal (not always in the queen English though).
Ashtead started the better of the 2 teams with constant pressure on the Grand Drive defence. After 15 mins Ashtead took the lead with a well executed chip from striker Tom Steer, 3 minutes later up pops Tom Steer again with a clinical right foot shot across the Grand Drive goalkeeper to make it 2-0. The midfield of Tom Cunningham, Freddie Feltham, Connor Moreton, Aiden Smith and Lewis Bensley were keeping the Grand Drive attack at bay with some good passing and tackling. Tom Bird between the sticks was solid with save after save from long range shots. We went in at half time still 2 up and feeling pretty confident.
The half time team talk was mostly about the appos rather unorthodox style of play, most of which the boys had not witnessed before.
The second half started in a rather familiar Ashtead C post half time frame of mind, sleepy....
After 10 minutes of the second half, Grand scored and after a further 15 minutes they were 5 – 2 up!!!!!! With 10 minutes left the back four of Joe Mason, Adam Sharpe, Tom Steven and Chris Dendy started to take control again. Solid tackling and good distribution found a ball out on the right wing with James Long. A cracking cross was met by Tom Steer to complete his hat trick with a well timed header. 5 minutes from the end and after constant pressure Ashtead got a fourth, Tom Steer again! with his back to goal, lifted the ball over his and the defenders head, turned and met it on the volley and it hits the back of the net. 5 minutes of pressure followed but to no avail and that is where it ended.
Well done to all the boys and a special mention should go to Chris Dendy who played in the back four for the first time and was my man of the Match.
