Match Report
It was the twelve goals of Christmas on Sunday morning, as ACu13W’s thrashed Raynes Park Vale Yellows 12-0 and strode into the semi-final of the Surrey Youth League Cup. Scoring a truckload of goals will have boosted the boys’ confidence but, in truth, this was the sort of mis-matched event that the SYL should avoid. The Wanderers sit two Divisions above Raynes Park and outplayed them across the park. The Yellows only had two meaningful attempts on goal and failed to register a single corner.
The match’s main distinction was to highlight the Wanderers improved teamwork, which has been in evidence since the Oxshott game. And, of course, it produced some absolute pearlers; the exchanges between Alex, Danny and Sam leading to Jack’s opening volley was one; George’s dancing from the left to the right side of the pitch to fire the ball home was another; and let’s ooh and aah one more time at Liam’s skidding header into the far corner just before half time.
The Wanderers would have won this fixture earlier in the season but not in such devastating style. Much of the recent development has come from the left wing, where Archie and Tom have built an excellent understanding out wide, supported by Joe’s intelligent running on the inside channel and Sam’s ball shielding master class in the central attacking midfield role. We have witnessed some thrilling, sophisticated football, based positional play and running into space.
And, if the team is challenged as they were by Stoneleigh, then their defence never let them down. They have only conceded four goals in the past three games. Finn taking the time to control and play the ball out of trouble, Captain Will looking for the opportunity to turn defence into attack, Charlie’s determination to save and hold the ball and the irrepressible Ben Glasspool, fast, resolute, whose sound judgement must make him a candidate for player of the season already.
