Match Report
ACu13W moved in to the next round of the SYL Invitation Cup, inspired by a fine attacking performance from Jack Goodin.
Jack netted twice and provided an assist as the Colts came from behind to run out 4-2 winners against Claygate Royals Griffins on a warm and sunny October morning.
A swift counter-attack in the first half saw the ball played out wide to Jack on the left. Jack drove to the bye line, pulled the ball back across the goal for Sam to steal in and flick the ball beautifully past the keeper.
A few minutes later Liam came on and made an immediate impact by beating the defence at the far post with a neat header to Will’s in-swinging corner. And Jack got in on the act with a sweet half volley following a swift exchange of passes with Liam through the middle.
But the Colts didn’t have it all their way. Claygate had initially taken the lead, when their forward reacted quickly to a long ball and found the gap in the middle of the back line. Balls over the top were exposing the flat back four and The Griffins would have scored another but for Charlie’s flying dive to tip the ball against the bar.
Claygate continued to press after the break and pulled a goal back after the restart, when the Colts failed to clear a corner. They looked good value for an equaliser but failed to convert when through on goal; hitting the post and putting the ball wide of an open goal.
Will read the danger and dropped deeper behind the back line; an effective tactical switch which blunted the Claygate threat. 10 minutes to go, the Colts won a free kick in front of goal and Jack sealed the victory by floating the ball over the wall into the Claygate goal.
