Match Report
The Wanderers kept their SYL Division One title challenge on course on Sunday by romping to a 5-0 home victory over Carshalton Athletic Whites. This was another strong team effort, with a fine performance from Will, who kept the Carshalton danger man quiet in the first half and got himself on the score sheet twice.
This was also Danny's best performance this season running the Carshalton defence ragged at times.
Wanderer’s pressure was relentless. It was ten minutes into the game before Carshalton could play out of their half and another ten before Charlie got to handle the ball. To be fair to Carshalton they kept at it and their No 24 and No 7 in particular showed flair and endeavour. They hit the Post in the second half and, later, Charlie was alert to a rising shot on the volley.
But, by contrast, the Wanderer’s netted five times from four different players. Jack’s in-swinging corners were superb; each one caused mayhem in the Carshalton six yard box. It was no surprise when Sam leapt and headed into the net for the first goal and Danny repeated the feat in the second half, with a well timed run and glancing header. In between, Sam passed the ball out wide to Tom, who checked his run to stay onside and saw his shot bypass the extended fingertips of the diving Carshalton keeper. And the impressive Will scored either side of half time, the first a glancing ball which crept over the line and the second a swooping high ball hit from half way inside the White’s half.
This was another clean sheet, which is great credit to the boys at the back. Worth noting that the Wanderers now boast the meanest defence in the Division, having let in only three goals to date - two penalties and a corner. There will be sterner tests, so it will be interesting to see how they deal with the stronger teams in the division.
