Match Report
A very warm welcome to Ashtead Colts Wanderers U13 (ACWU13) 15/16 season, especially to the players and families new to the club. First of all, huge thanks to Paul Spencer and Tim Stokes for taking on responsibility for coaching and managing the squad for the coming season. Paul and Tim have done a great job in rebuilding and enlarging the squad for the 11 aside season; providing new kit, registering for the Surrey Youth League and arranging new training facilities. So the first game of the season at the new home ground at Therfield school against AFC Ewell. Good parking and a well maintained pitch but bring your own coffee. The match kicked off with Ewell playing at high tempo, putting long balls through to an energetic front four. They pushed up and, at one point, had their entire outfield in the Colts half. Brave tactics but difficult to maintain on a large pitch for any length of time. The ACW defence, marshalled by Will and with plenty of chatter, kept their shape and soaked up the challenge. Ewell tired, gaps appeared and the Colts began to take command of the midfield through the impressive Finn and George. Urged on by the Coaches, diagonal balls were played out wide and Jack and Liam began to find space in the inside channels. But no goals until a tactical switch caught Ewell off guard. The wingers changed sides and Danny rounded his defender on the right side by-line before playing the ball back to the onrushing Joe, who fired into the far corner. Colts 1-0 and it should have been more. A mix-up in the Ewell defence almost gifted the Colts an own goal, the lively Joe couldn’t quite fire the rebound and, later, a corner ran across the goal face begging to be poked in. The Colts were far less disciplined in the second half. They continued to dominate the play but the width narrowed and too many balls went through the middle, making it easy for Ewell to defend. It was 20 minutes before Jack enjoyed some quick interplay with Danny on the left, before stabbing the ball across the area for Sam to strike home the second. At 2-0, it should have been comfortable but they retreated deep and allowed Ewell to overrun the midfield. Fortunately Ewell were just as tired and their one good chance, a high ball from the right, was saved by Charlie with a well timed jump and strong wrists. Full time and 2-0 to the Colts. The season’s underway.
