Match Report
Dramatic finish breaks Corinthian hearts
The Corinthians were denied back to back victories by a heart breaking last 5 minutes after dominating the game against Claygate.
Ashtead started where they left off last week and were unlucky to go behind to a Claygate goal that came against the run of play. They were soon back on terms when Guy Francis collected a loose ball and muscled through 2 tackles to finish well. The first half played out with Ashtead mainly on the front foot but unable to score against the big, athletic Claygate keeper. Owen Thompson-Smith was having a fine game in a central role, linking play to the forwards and looking solid defensively but the game stayed 1-1 at half time.
The second half continued in this manner with Ashtead on the attack with Will Douglass on the left looking particularly dangerous. Peter Boardman was in control on right with some ferocious tackling and applying his ever improving distribution. He was supported from midfield by Ashtead debutant Jack Newman who has brought some steel to the midfield and looks like an exciting new player. Ashtead got their reward for their positivity when Will and Adam Thornton combined well with some deft one touch football that led to a lovely cross that James Moore converted at the back post. A great goal with some fine team play and finished when James showed determination to get to the cross and controlled a volley finish with great skill.
Ashtead had a couple of further chances but the Claygate equalised with a breakaway goal and scored an unlikely winner when an incredibly dubiously awarded freekick was allowed to bounce dangerously into the area and into the net. The Corinthians showed their spirit and tried to rally themselves but the final whistle followed shortly after.
A despondent Ashtead should be proud of their efforts and with some more composed finishing and a little more luck they would have seen the game out comfortably.
Ashtead Man of the Match
Peter Boardman – his tackling has never been in doubt but Peter has taken on the advice from the Ashtead coaching staff, looks calm in possession and passes the ball out from defence to great effect. A solid game from one of the most dependable players in the squad.
