Match Report
Last minute drama as Ashtead edge thriller
What a game..! Ashtead had 4 goal scoring records broken (in the first half by one player..!), there was a fantastic fight back from Burpham and a last few seconds that Ole Gunnar Solskjær would have been proud of.
The first half belonged to Ashtead who looked comfortable in their 4-4-2 formation and took the lead quickly when George Bartlett played a great pass for Guy Francis whose route to goal could only be stopped with a last minute foul that gave the Ref no choice but to award the penalty. Guy stepped up and made no mistake from the spot. They continued to press forward and scored again when Owen Thompson-Smith got possession on the edge of the box and shaped to shoot but played a clever pass into Guy instead who scored easily. Will Douglass on the left was giving the Burpham defence a torrid time and one run took him passed 3 players only to see his shot well saved by the keeper. Burpham tried their best to turn things round but the Ashtead back four of Oscar Power, Alex Sealey, Dylan Williams and Captain Fraser Swan looked solid and in control. Max Parris came on for Oscar and slotted in well. A third goal came when Owen won the ball slipped a pass to Gaffers in the left channel who crossed for Guy to score his third with another great finish. Still the Corinthians came forward and scored a wonderful fourth goal when Guy broke down the left and laid a perfect cross for James Moore to slot home. 4-0 at half time.
The second half was a different story….Burpham showed great spirit to come back into the game and scored a couple of goals quickly. They put great pressure on the Ashtead defence but with Dylan’s energy, Alex’s tough tackling and Max’s cool clearances they didn’t dominate in the way Ashtead did. Fraser Swan was having a fine game in controlling the area in front of the back 4 and his positional discipline and tackling was key in keeping Ashtead in front. Adam Thornton came on up front and worked hard to keep the Burpham defence occupied and linked up well with George to almost send him clear. Burpham threw everything forward and scored a third but were being held at bay by Ashtead’s doggedness, in particular James Moore’s determination to out-muscle Burphams most dangerous player and Joe Young’s safe handling in the Ashtead goal. However, 2 minutes from the end Burpham equalised with cross shot that drifted in at the far post. They raced back to the centre as it looked like they had the momentum to go for the win but did not count on that Corinthian spirit..! They set off from the kick off and worked the ball out to the right where George and James Moore swapped passes and drew a foul on the side line. George didn’t hurry, set himself and whipped in a marvellous ball across the face of the goal where Gaffers thumped the winner in with a towering header. It proved to be the last moment of the game and was a moment to savour for the Ashtead team and their supporters.
A game to remember for Ashtead as all 13 players in the matchday squad made a contribution and many put in season best performances. They played very well in the first half, had to dig in and show some spirit in the second half and had the determination to come back from a late set back to give us a thrilling finale.
NB – The broken scoring records all belonged to Guy. First hat-trick from a Corinthians player; first penalty scored by a Corinthians player; most goals in a season (12 so far) and now the Corinthians all time top scorer (17)
Ashtead Men of the Match
In a game where all players shone, Fraser Swan and George Bartlett put in performances that caught the eye. George work hard in a midfield role, tackled when needed and set up 2 goals with his incisive passing and dead ball skills. Fraser played a real Captain’s game and inspired his team to keep going when the game was slipping away (and almost scored with a bullish run).
