Match Report
Guy is the Local Hero in narrow defeat to high flying Mayford
Ashtead suffered a 4-3 home defeat against a side challenging for the league in an entertaining encounter. Mayford looked a good side but Ashtead matched them for effort and scored the pick of the goals with some classy finishing....breaking 2 scoring records in the process..! It was a strong first half for Ashtead and they took the game to Mayford from the kick off. George Bartlett was causing problems for the Mayford defence playing as a roaming forward and was only denied by some robust defending after 2 speedy runs. Owen Thompson-Smith was playing as a central striker and it was he who opened the scoring with a cool finish at the back post after some determined play from James Gaffney. The lead was almost doubled when a clever through ball from George found Oscar Power on a typically marauding run only for the keeper to bravely save at his feet. Ashtead went close again when James was put clean through on goal by Jamie Young’s crafty free kick only for the keeper to save again. Max Parris picked up where he left off last week and looked in command in the centre of the Ashtead defence making several important clearances. Max was joined by Dylan Williams and Oscar in reducing Mayford to long shots with some characteristically enthusiastic tackling and Guy Francis, filling in as Ashtead keeper, easily dealt with these. When Mayford did produce a fine effort on goal, Guy made a marvellous save, tipping the ball around the post at full stretch. Ashtead Captain Fraser Swan and his midfield partner, Peter Boardman battled hard with Peter winning every 50/50 tackle!
Mayford regrouped after halftime and took a 3-1 lead with some impressive attacking but Ashtead replied when James hit a fabulous long ball for George who controlled well and scored with a cool finish. Mayford scored again but Ashtead refused to lie down and James again found George who cut inside the last defender to once again finish with some style. The game was now in the balance and Adam Thornton battled hard with Fraser and Peter in midfield to ensure Ashtead kept on the offensive. Fraser almost scored an equaliser with a single minded run and shot but eventually time ran out and Ashtead’s hard work went unrewarded. Some excellent performances this week for Ashtead – George’s 2 classy goals capped a fine game for him; Jamie played with determination despite taking a nasty blow to the face and James continues to impress in his debut season…..Finally, the 2 scoring records? George is now The Corinthians all-time leading goal scorer and Owen is the only player to score in all 3 seasons the team have played.
Ashtead Man of the Match Guy Francis – a wonderfully brave performance from Guy who played with an injured knee. He made several good saves to add to his assured handling and his kicking put Mayford under constant pressure. Well done Guy – you stepped up well when the team need you!
Lines from the Laser What a game today guys, what a game! Speaking of 'guys', Guy played amazingly in goal with some excellent saves and a long drop kicks which really gave the opposition something to think about! He completely deserved Man of the Match. Once again Max was solid in defence, clearing every ball that came his way. 2 Brilliant goals from George and a brilliant kick from Owen, really showed Mayford what we could do. James set up loads of shots and had a go himself. Oscar, Peter and Dylan shared defending duties out on the wing and Adam and Jamie played some strong football. On Tuesday we need to practice throw ins and being the first to the ball but keep it up lads we have made some great progress and a win is on its way!
