Match Report
Ashtead proves a Lucky Town for Hart
Ashtead made a tremendous effort against a talented Hart side that are likely to finish champions. Gritty defending, fantastic goalkeeping and some slick passing meant the scoreline did not flatter Ashtead and in fact they were unlucky not to steal a point.
It was an even first half with both teams making attacking progress and Max Parris had to be vigilant in his Stopper role to ensure Hart did not break through. Hart had 2 small, tricky wingers and Ashtead Captain Fraser Swan and Oscar Power had to dig in at fullback to keep them at bay. Jamie Young in the centre of midfield was heavily involved and was unlucky on a couple of occasions not to set George Bartlett on free the right with cross field passes. Hart are title contenders for good reason and they took the lead with a quick break after an Ashtead attack. George flew down the wing and cut the ball back to Oscar who supported him well – the ball was moved quickly to James Gaffney whose shot was blocked and cleared leaving Ashtead on the back foot. The Hart right winger hit a scorching shot that Ashtead keeper Joe Young saved only for the ball to be volleyed home on the rebound. 1-0 at half time but Ashtead definitely in the game.
The second half saw a season best performance from Ashtead. Guy Francis and Peter Boardman were outmuscling their opponents in midfield and George was linking well with James with some incisive passing. Adam Thornton came into midfield and was all hustle and bustle to stop Hart get into any rhythm. The whole Ashtead team were straining to get back on terms and it was against the run of play when Hart scored a second. A break down the right finished with a shot that forced Joe into a brilliant fingertip save onto the post only for the ball to drop to a Hart forward who gratefully scored. This seemed to spur on Ashtead even more and their resolve was epitomised by Guy who got up from taking the ball full in the face from close range to score a fine equaliser. James and George had moved the ball into the Hart area and it broke for Guy who finished with a thumping left foot shot. They continued to attack and were desperately unlucky when first George sent in a dangerous freekick that was just cleared and then Guy hit a long range shot just wide.
Despite a tremendous effort in the last few minutes, time ran out for Ashtead and the game finished with no further goals. The Hart Manager was full of praise for Ashtead at the end and they fully deserved it with a battling display that was undone by 2 lucky goals.
Ashtead Man of the Match
Joe Young – superb in all areas of his game today….handling, catching and shot stopping were all top drawer and his positioning has greatly improved this year. Well done Joe, a display to be proud of.
