Match Report
Glory Days can’t be far away for brave Ashtead
Ashtead finished their long, challenging season with a typically brave comeback that fell just short. They started very badly and were 0-3 down within the first 10 minutes. However, as is the Corinthians way, they fought back and actually won the next 50 minutes 2-1!
The comeback started when Ashtead Captain Fraser Swan began to get a grip in midfield and this allowed Jamie Young some time on the ball to pick out a fantastic through ball to Guy Francis who ran through and finished strongly. This inspired Ashtead and they kept an organised Farnham side on the back foot and a second goal looked inevitable and arrived when Guy forced his way through 3 tackles to thump the ball home. 2-3 at halftime.
Farnham started the second half in determined fashion but found Ashtead keeper in the great form he has shown in the last few weeks. His handling, positioning and shot stopping were all first class. Max Pariss was again solid as the last defender and made several important clearances. He was well supported by Dylan Williams at left back who was putting in a tremendous effort to keep the tricky Farnham winger in check. George Bartlett looked lively when in possession and was central to the Ashtead attacks with some perceptive passing. One such attack almost led to the equaliser but Adam Thornton had his shot well saved by the Farnham keeper. Guy almost scored again with another strong run and his shot only just cleared the bar. This constant effort to get back on terms took its toll and the Ashtead players started to tire and Farnham took advantage with a breakaway goal. Ashtead still didn’t give up and Oscar Power almost scored the goal of the season with a splendid run down the right wing that finished with a blistering shot that just cleared the far post.
The game finished with no further score but Ashtead can take great heart from the way they responded to their poor start and can look forward to next season with confidence.
Ashtead Man of the Match
Joe Young/Guy Francis – The honour is shared this week as it was impossible to separate Joe and Guy. Guy was all power and purpose and scored 2 great goals and it was clear to see the hard work Joe has put in to improve and demonstrated what a fine keeper he has become.
Lionheart Award
Dylan Williams – Dylan had a difficult task with the Farnham winger but stuck to it with great determination and finished the game with some great blocks and tackles.
