Match Report
Test of character!
The Rovers gave a brave and committed performance this morning in a narrow defeat to the division leaders. With Staines fielding several lads of a more mature stature we withstood an early barrage and once we accustomed ourselves to the physical nature of the game we began to match them. Following a number of corners a Staines defender diverted the ball goalwards and with the goalie struggling to stop it the ball was bundled in by Jack O and Jack M. Both have claimed it, but I think it was narrowly Jack M's. It looked like we would make the break with our lead intact but following a long ball the defence was outmuscled and Staines equalised moments before the whistle.
The second half was more of the same with Max, Ben and Jack O all having good opportunities to score, but Staines added a second following a defensive lapse. Undaunted, we showed great character to take the game back to them and in our search for an equaliser left some gaps at the back which allowed Staines to add a third. The last 10 minutes saw us lay siege to the Staines goal with admirable commitment and ambition but it wasn't to be.
This was a great team peformance which proved a real physical challenge. On the whole I was really pleased with how we coped and got to grips with their big lads. Defensive lapses cost us, but we created enough chances and on another day could have walked away with a deserved share of the points. I thought Nick and the defence were excellent, Mateo and Ish battled brilliantly in the middle and Jack G had a great game.
MOTM - Mateo and Nick can feel disappointed not to get it, but it has to go to Ish for a tremendously committed performance that should inspire some of the boys in the team to up their game. She battled and challenged players twice her size without any fear, bravely headed the ball numerous times and seemed to be everywhere on the pitch. To those boys unwilling to compete physically, Ish is a shining example for you.
