Match Report
It’s a funny old game..!
It may be a football cliché but it’s true to say that the score didn’t represent the match. Even the Ashtead Coach’s wife said “that wasn’t a 5-1 game” as if she had a regular spot sitting on the Match of the Day sofa..!
The first half started fairly evenly with the game being contested mainly in midfield. Reigate attacked in numbers but the Ashtead defensive pairing of captain Will Douglass and Owen Thompson-Smith stood firm and were ably assisted by the (once again) excellent goalkeeping of Lorcan Marrett. Ashton Packham gave Ashtead a good outlet (and the defence some relief) with his usual energetic running and running with the ball.
Reigate kept up their adventurous policy of attacking with 4 and sometimes 5 players and eventually they overwhelmed the Ashtead defence and scored two goals. Ashtead responded well for the rest of the first half and despite having to play up the slope went close to scoring with shots from Giovanna Thomas and Joseph Young.
The second half continued in the same manner with Reigate always looking to commit players forward but Will and Owen gave second half keeper Joseph some good protection with Owen making a fantastic last ditch clearance when it looked a certain goal. Reigate extended the lead to 3-0 after a mix up in the Ashtead defence but once again the Ashtead team refused to give up and a good determined run and cross shot from Max Pariss down the left wing was followed up by Giovanna and then Lorcan who got the last touch for his first goal for the club. The Ashtead coaching team were clearly delighted as Giovanna and Lorcan had responded to the challenge to support the forwards more.
The last few minutes were exciting with Ashtead continuing to press forward and George Bartlett’s trademark corners created some scoring chances. A cool pass from George gave Lorcan the chance of a long range shot but it flew a couple of feet wide. Reigate scored on a breakaway with a minute or so left and then a fifth goal after a wicked deflection gave Joseph no chance.
This was a good, even game played in an excellent spirit.
Player of the Week: Will Douglass – continues to impress with some calm defending and has great positional awareness that is helping the players around him. One particular tackle had the parents on the side mentioning Bobby Moore..!
