Match Report
The first ever league game for a new squad did not disappoint with hearts racing at the end of a tight encounter. Ashtead, brought together as a team for the first time, passed the ball confidently and took an early lead with a lovely finish from Samuel Jenkins; just rewards for the territory they had enjoyed and some amazing interlinking between the midfield trio of Aaron, Samuel and Jed. The first half was seen out with some confident football and a great save from Wilf Turner who kept his eye on a high ball to take what was made to look an easy catch. Early in the second half Nuttfield equalised unexpectedly and really started to come into the game more, looking threatening on the break. Having seen some tremendous positional defending by George Beswick and Dominic Bunyard, and determined midfield play from Aaron Endeley, Archie Coldicott was moved up front and soon took the opportunity to fire off a powerful long range effort into the bottom right hand corner. A great strike, but it was soon cancelled out again by Nuttfield. Hearts were then in mouths again as a goal line scramble with several Ashtead players sticking their feet in but somehow, it just didn't go in and the score remained 2-2. Another break from Ashtead resulted in a long range from Archie again which the Nuttfiled keeper struggled with as the ball trickled over the line to give Ashtead the advantage again. But it just wasn't to be as Nuttfield won a dubious penalty in the dying minutes. A thunderous strike from their no. 10 gave Jed no chance although he made a great dive and almost got to it Coach Coldicott commented after the match that even he wouldn't have been able to stop it; probably couldn't even get down that low for starters! So, after a cat and mouse game of great tension, a draw was probably a fair result. Brilliant start from a group of boys in their first game together. Watch this space!
