Match Report
Ashtead unlucky to miss out in 9 goal thriller
The Corinthians just lost out on a well deserved point in this exciting, well contested game.
After the Remembrance silence was impeccably observed by both sides, Molesey started with real purpose and were a goal up in the first few minutes. They continued to pressure Ashtead and a second was added despite the brave resistance of the Ashtead defence and particularly Joe Young in the Ashtead goal.
Some relief came when George Bartlett on the left wing created chances for Oscar Power and Will Douglass with some clever passes and it was George’s pass to Guy Francis that led to a goal when Guy hit the net with a fine left foot shot.
The second half was a much more even affair with Ashtead more than holding their own and coming back into the game strongly. They won a corner and James Gaffney was unlucky when his effort hit the bar but the ball fell to Will who followed up well and scored from close range. The tide was turning and Ashtead took a deserved lead when some great harrying work from their captain Fraser Swan forced the ball to George who scored from the edge of the box despite a valiant effort from the keeper. Molesey came back straightaway; scored, then scored again and subjected Ashtead to a series of dangerous corners that had the defenders and Joe desperately clearing. They got their reward when Guy chased down a long clearance and burst through the Molesey defence to score with a low shot – his 6th goal in 5 games (only Ronaldo has a better goal to game ratio in European football). Molesey responded well (again) and scored a slightly undeserving winner following more pressure on the Ashtead goal. The Corinthians ran out of time and the game came to a breathless end.
A fine performance from Ashtead with significant contributions from all areas. They showed commendable effort in some last ditch blocking and clearing and great spirit in forcing their way back into the game. Hugely positive that Ashtead can offer a genuine threat on goal and have some dogged defenders when needed.
Player of the Week
Guy – fantastic effort and some fine finishing from Guy to keep up his impressive scoring run. His second goal was down to his tenacity to chase the ball and his determination to get a shot on goal. Well done..!
Lionheart Award
Joe – yet another great effort from Joe under immense pressure at times. His handling and distribution continues to improve at a steady rate and is added to his undoubted bravery.
