Match Report
After an impeccably observed Remembrance Day silence, Ashtead comfortably won this full bloodied cup tie with a marvellous team performance full of hard work, commitment and some great goals.
Despite being without several first team players, they started with real intent and were one up quickly when Gaffers made a determined run down the left, held the ball up well and squared it to Oscar Power on the edge of the area who hit it first time into the roof of the net; a screamer to get Ashtead off the mark. The lead was doubled when George Bartlett took control of a loose ball in midfield and slipped a pass into James Moore who advanced on the goal and finished with a crisp shot. Farncombe responded well and were level after 2 long range goals – the first was an unstoppable cracker but the equaliser owed a lot to the swirling wind. A tough moment for Ashtead but they hit back immediately when they pushed forward from the kick off and James crossed from the right wing for Oscar to volley home superbly from 10 yards. Ashtead went further ahead just before the break when George played a pass in behind the Farncombe defence and Matt Burns held off 2 defenders to score at the near post. A 4-2 half time lead was no more than the Corinthians deserved.
The second half was a more even game as Farncombe fought to keep their cup dreams from slipping away, and were led by their skilful number 7. However, Jack Newman in the Ashtead defence matched him with a gritty display of man to man marking to the point where he was reduced to long shots and got so frustrated he was withdrawn. The Ashtead back four stood firm against Farncombe and were marshalled well by their skipper Fraser Swan. Fraser and Alex Sealey formed a formidable central pairing and cut out, blocked and cleared almost all the Farncombe attacks and were backed up well by Joe Young the Ashtead Sweeper Keeper when needed. Max Parris continues to impress at right back, was solid in defending and looked comfortable in controlling the ball and setting up attacks with some thumping cross field passes. The back four was completed by Dylan Williams who had a busy last 15 minutes as Farncombe concentrated their efforts down the left but he also stood firm and made a number of important clearances.
The game finished as it started with Ashtead on the front foot and George once again played a pass through for Matt who easily held off the last defender and scored through the keepers legs to end the Farncombe resistance.
All in all a good days work for Ashtead; they won both halves, their defence looked solid, the midfield defended and attacked with purpose and Gaffers selflessly led the line up front.
Ashtead Man of the Match
Genuinely top class performances from everyone but special mention to:
Oscar Power – a fine performance of energy and determination from Oscar. His 2 goals, both of them great hits, were due to his desire to support the attackers and were the platform for the win.
George Bartlett – great effort from George today with 3 assists and performance that included some dogged defending as well as offering lots of menace in attack.
Matt Burns – another performance of great heart from Matt that was typified by his 2 goals that were both strong, long runs holding off defenders with good finishing shots.
