Match Report
Corinthians storm to top of league with exciting win..!
A brilliant team effort saw the Corinthians get the season off to a great start with a win against a spirited Burpham side.
Ashtead completely dominated the first 25 minutes and reached unprecedented heights by racing into a 4-0 lead. The first goal came when James Gaffney slipped a clever pass through to George Bartlett who slotted home with a cool left foot shot. The next goal came when Guy Francis reacted superbly to a poor clearance from the Burpham keeper, controlled the ball with his chest and volleyed home from 25 yards – screamer! 5 minutes later Guy ran onto a good through pass from Jamie Young and crossed for James Gaffney to head in the third. Ashtead went into dreamland with a fourth shortly after when James Moore chipped in from the edge of the area for his Corinthians debut goal.
The last period of the first half and the opening of the second half saw Burpham come back into the game strongly with a hat-trick by their marauding “he looks about 18” midfielder. A tactical change from Ashtead saw James Moore go man-to-man and his strength and persistence saw the threat of an equaliser dramatically reduced to one chance that keeper Joe Young comfortably saved . However, the game was in the balance until the final minutes when Will Douglass, who had a fine game on his return to the Corinthians after exercising his buy-back clause, won a throw-in deep in Burpham territory that Peter Boardman launched into the area for Guy to score with a true poachers finish. The final whistle followed shortly after and was celebrated from Burpham to Las Vegas.!
This was a victory based on all 13 players contributing with hard work, great finishing and a determination to not let Burpham back into the game. Max Parris, Oscar Power, Peter Boardman and Captain Fraser Swan in the Ashtead defence were resolute and disciplined. The midfield of Jamie Young, James Moore, Will Douglass, Owen Thompson-Smith and George Bartlett all worked hard against the strongest part of Burphams team whilst looking to get forward to support the forward line where Adam Thornton, Guy Francis and James Gaffney looked dangerous and full of attacking intent.
A marvellous opening game and a good platform for the rest of the season.
Ashtead Man of the Match : Max Parris – excellent game from Max who showed great positional discipline and followed his instructions to the letter in his “stopper” role. Made numerous clearances when Burpham put Ashtead under pressure and was critical to the victory.
