Match Report
Corinthians go close in season opener..!
The Corinthians first game of their third season was a tight affair with some positives for them to take away as well as some areas to work on.
A new look team had 3 debutants in Monty Black, Guy Francis and Jamie Young who all fitted in well and had Joe Young and Max Parris sharing goalkeeper duties. Joe started in confident manner and easily dealt with the long through balls that Burpham tried. Ashtead Captain Fraser “the Laser” Swan also started confidently and looked in control in central midfield and Peter Boardman picked up where he left off last season and made a series of crunching tackles to keep the opposition at bay. It was end to end for the first 10 minutes and a Burpham attack finished with a strong shot that Joe saved but was unlucky to see the rebound drop straight to an attacker who bundled the ball home.
Ashtead responded strongly and were level within a few minutes. A good move through the left saw Owen Thompson-Smith slip a clever ball to Max who crossed first time to the far post and Jamie bravely finished for his first Ashtead goal. The Corinthians continued to press and were unlucky when winger George Bartlett chipped a cross/shot in and the ball was cleared off the line. Half time came with the game all square.
The second half continued in this entertaining, open fashion with chances at both ends. Max made several good stops in goal and Dylan Williams slotted well into a defensive role and cleared the ball effectively when needed. Ashtead were unlucky not to score with 3 good chances that tested the Burpham keeper; George sent Oscar Power running down the left wing with a good pass where he easily beat the defender and was only denied by a brave save, George then tricked his was to a one on one but again the keeper was quick off his line to block and finally Owen was unlucky to see a terrific long range shot turned away. The decisive goal came shortly before the end when a long shot took a bobble that fooled Max and unluckily found its way into the Ashtead goal. Once again the Corinthians responded well but could not find an equaliser.
A decent start to the season with 3 players making excellent debuts and others playing in new positions. Lots of positives including the constant threat on the opposition’s goal, Joe’s good performance in both halves and Fraser stepping up to the captaincy with real purpose.
Ashtead Man of the Match
Peter Boardman – fantastic display of hard-but-fair tackling from Peter including one perfectly timed tackle on the Burpham winger that could have won the award on its own. Well done Peter – keep it up!
(A new feature for this year…Ashtead Captain Fraser’s thoughts on the game)
Lines from the Laser
Well done today everyone, we played well. A great start to the season. Well done to Jamie for scoring that amazing goal and well done to Joe for being such a good goal keeper in the first match! The passing was good and our defence was strong in places and even though we lost, I think we will get better very quickly.
