COLTS SEEK THAT ELUSIVE WIN – AFC Ewell 5 Ashtead Colts 2

The pressure was on for the boys to find their form on a sunny Saturday morning in Ewell, sadly this did not quite happen.

The early minutes of the game had Ewell crawling all over the Ashtead defence and it took some fine defending from Sam Hunt and Jason Cook to keep them out and to strike some good ball forward to Jonnie and Alex.

After 5 minutes a goal mouth scramble saw Ewell hammer a shot past Harry Plumb and into the net.  Ewell kept the pressure up with a number of shots at goal and breaks, but the defence and goal keeping kept them out.  Meanwhile a counter attack was built by Ben Plumb and Jason, a neat pass went inside to Jonnie who ran through two players struck the ball at goal for a rebound to be hit squarely in the corner of the net by Alex Cresswell.  Ewell quickly responded and took the lead after a ‘goal hanger’ (who was clearly offside), snuck a sneaky shot straight past Ben. 2-1.  The action built after a missed penalty by Ewell (following an unlucky tumble inside the box) ended in another frantic scramble.  Undaunted Ashtead started to play some good football and Marcus Wint was involved in some fine tackles and started to make breaks down the wing, feeding the ball to Jonnie and Jason in the middle.  This paid off and before long a pass by Marcus gave Jonnie a chance at goal, the ball came back to Marcus who took a shot which was neatly picked up by Alex charging into the goal mouth and he thumped it into the net. 2-2 half time.

Second half.  Not as good as the first, but there was promise in the form of Daniel Harding who found his feet and looked like coming close on a number of occasions, Simon King who made some neat passes and ran well with the ball and  Jason who never gave up and kept talking to the team and directing operations.  Ewell found their form and hit shot after shot on target at Ben Plumb, who made some fantastic saves.  One shot had the opposition calling for the Video ref as it appeared to defy physics and stay on the right side of the line. 3 goals later and it was 5-2 to AFC Ewell final score.  Heads up Colts, it will be your time soon.
